Skiing is a hugely popular pursuit and there are two skifields within 45 minutes drive of Wanaka township – the very family-friendly Cardrona skifield and Treble Cone skifield.
Lake Wanaka region's reputation for great walking sees the national Te Araroa trail bisecting Wanaka and Hawea on its journey between New Zealand's far north and deep south. You can choose a gentle stroll around the lake, a guided walk or a serious hike – there’s no shortage of options.
The choice is immense with an array of quality vineyards within easy driving distance and boutique breweries now also making their mark. Award-winning cafes and restaurants can be found in the township and farmers markets make shopping for local produce an easy option.
From the incredibly popular Warbirds over Wanaka held every two years at Easter to Wanakafest, the food and wine festival held each spring, there’s always something going on. Every July the NZ Mountain Film Festival showcases incredible local and international adventure films and the Winter Games sees the best skiers and snowboarders descend on the region. There’s also numerous endurance and adventure races throughout the year.
Snow Farm is a ski area near Wanaka, New Zealand, dedicated to cross-country skiing. It features 55 km of trails, and the conference centre has accommodation for about 60 people.
